BOSTON (AP) - State lawmakers are planning to hear from the public this week on a bill that would require that all foods sold in Massachusetts containing genetically engineered ingredients be clearly labeled.
Supporters say they’ve already won the backing of more than 150 of the state’s 200 lawmakers.
A coalition supporting the measure, including MASSPIRG, is planning to hold a press conference on Boston Common before Tuesday’s hearing.
The bill seeks to require labels on food products and agricultural seed stock that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.
The food industry has pointed to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s voluntary labeling policy, but opposes making it mandatory, arguing that genetically modified ingredients are safe.
The public hearing before the Legislature’s Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the Statehouse.
